Despite Arrests, Prayers Continue To Inspire Work Stoppage

A month after the Las Conchas fire began, Trinity Nuclear Abolition (TNA) is holding a peace vigil in front of the main sign at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The vigil begins at 7:00 AM and ends just before five of the demonstrators appear in court at 9:15 AM tomorrow—July 27th—for the arraignments of a few who are charged with “trespassing” at LANL last month. Recognizing the danger Los Alamos presents to the world, the activists face up to a year in jail for praying at LANL and notifying employees of their duty to stop LANL's criminal activities as per the Nuremberg Principles.

At the conclusion of a 24-hour prayer vigil organized by TNA, five peaceful demonstrators were arrested at the checkpoint leading to the CMRR site (nuclear bomb pit factory construction area) on June 20th—the day after Fathers' Day. They were part of a group of 30 on Monday, including the Raging Grannies and Radical Cheerleaders. Another 10 people from Pax Christi New Mexico had been there the day before (Fathers Day and Holy Trinity Sunday, 2011). TNA vigils have been conducted at LANL since August 2007. Tomorrow's peace vigil will be the 38th picketing event for TNA, and occurs on the anniversary date of three nuclear bomb explosions in Nevada on Western Shoshone lands (named Witchita, Billet & Stanley, detonated in 1962, 1967, and 1976 respectively).

The five who are all pleading “not guilty” have been called the LANL Fathers Day Five. They expect jury trials later this year. TNA organizes hour-long monthly vigils at LANL, and pledges to continue public witness activities until LANL becomes a clean-up facility, ceasing all NEW nuclear weapons research, development, or production. At the end of this week (on Saturday July 30th ) TNA will hold another vigil at 2:00 PM with Pax Christi New Mexico at the annual Hiroshima commemorative meditation in ashes and sackcloth. A week later TNA will return for Nagasaki Day for another vigil.

TNA supports the immediate peaceful ending of nuclear weapons research, development, and production. For four years TNA has protested LANL’s noncompliance with the U.S. Constitutional duties and U.S. treaty obligations. TNA conducts monthly vigils to remind the public and the LANL employees that LANL is actively conducting international criminal activity, as shown by the nuclear bomb pit production work at the Chemistry Metallurgy Research (CMR) facility, and as LANL continues to build a replacement for the current CMR facility (the new CMRR).

The CMRR Nuclear Facility violates the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by working to make more nuclear weapons. It is also sited foolishly on a narrow mesa of volcanic ash in an earthquake zone. The price tag therefore continues to rise each year and is currently scheduled to cost over 6 billion dollars.

TNA is always nonviolent, playful, prayerful and peaceful in the prayer-actions conducted at LANL. The vigil coming July 27th is a standard 1-hour picketing event in front of the main sign at the corner of West Jemez and Diamond Dr. TNA will have about 8 people holding vigil from 7:00am to 8:30 am. The individuals involved will not physically bother LANL employees or visitors.
